Financial performance is one of the most important factors we evaluate when considering an acquisition. Revenue, margins, cash flow, and EBITDA help us understand how a business has performed and whether it has the potential to generate attractive long-term returns. They matter—and they should.
But numbers alone rarely tell the entire story.
At Eight Six Ventures, we believe a company's culture is often its greatest competitive advantage. Financial statements provide a snapshot of where a business has been; culture provides insight into where it can go.
Strong cultures are built over years through trust, accountability, and shared purpose. They influence how employees treat customers, how leaders make decisions, and how organizations respond to challenges. While financial performance can fluctuate from quarter to quarter, a healthy culture often provides the resilience that allows great businesses to adapt, improve, and grow over time.
When evaluating a business, we look beyond the financial metrics. We want to understand the people behind the numbers.
How are employees treated?
How long have key team members been with the company?
Do customers remain loyal because of relationships, service, or reputation?
Does management take pride in developing people, or simply managing tasks?
The answers to these questions often reveal far more about a company's future than a spreadsheet alone.
This philosophy also shapes how we approach acquisitions. We are not interested in changing a company's identity simply because ownership changes. Every successful business has developed unique strengths, traditions, and ways of serving its customers. Preserving those qualities while thoughtfully introducing improvements is often more valuable than implementing sweeping changes on day one.
That doesn't mean culture replaces financial discipline. A great culture cannot compensate for an unsustainable business model, nor should strong financial performance excuse poor leadership or a toxic work environment. The most exceptional businesses combine both: disciplined operations and a culture that inspires people to do their best work.
As a long-term holding and investment company, our objective is not simply to acquire businesses. It is to steward them responsibly. We believe enduring value is created when talented people are empowered, customers are consistently served, and leaders make decisions with a long-term perspective.
Ultimately, EBITDA may explain what a business has achieved, but culture often determines what it is capable of becoming.
That is why, at Eight Six Ventures, we evaluate both with equal seriousness—and why culture will always remain central to how we invest, operate, and grow exceptional businesses.
